The Best Accessories for Men: Part 3 – Hats
Ah yes, the hat. How do you wear a hat without looking like a complete belter? Here’s an informative guide to choosing the right headwear. Celebrities read on – some of you could do with a bit of advice in this area (yes Jay Kay I’m talking to you).
Before we start, let’s be clear… we’re not looking at hats as they were originally intended – a form of skull protection or a religious statement – no sir, we’re talking fashion and here’s how to get it right.
The Beanie hat – strictly for students and teens only and really it’s had its day. If you own one wear it only on emergency bad hair days or in the house.

Fedora – the ultimate rock-star hat, universally popular and the more battered the better. Think Pete Doherty and you’ll get the general idea – tilt it to the side slightly for a hip look. You’ll find the best styles in the men’s fashion section at ASOS.
The cap – flat cap, driving cap, newsboy cap – whatever you call it this is one style that never seems to date. A favourite of Brad Pitt, the traditional cap is a good way to make a statement so wear it to show off your inner artist (just leave the plus-fours in the wardrobe). Note: the baseball cap is not cool, clever or ironic. Avoid.
Trilby – a structured hat that’s slightly more formal than the hip Fedora and one of Justin Timberlake’s top picks. Choose a straw version for a funky summer look; tip it to the back of your head for extra style points.

Hats are still the number one accessory for 2010 so trawl the shops, try every possible style and see what works for you. Be adventurous and remember: if you want to get ahead, get a hat.
